What Is Blockchain Technology? 🔗

Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger technology that records data across a network of computers. Each record, or "block," is cryptographically linked to the one before it, forming an immutable chain that is extremely difficult to alter retroactively.

Originally described in academic research during the early 1990s and later implemented in 2008 as the underlying data structure for a peer-to-peer electronic payment system, blockchain has since found applications across numerous industries including supply chain management, healthcare records, and digital identity verification.

At ChainLiteracy, we break down these concepts into accessible, objective explanations so that anyone, from students to professionals, can understand how this technology works and why it matters.

Topics We Cover

Educational Topics 📚

Our curriculum spans the core pillars of blockchain technology, from foundational cryptography to the latest developments in Web3 protocols.

Cryptography & Blockchain Security

Understand the mathematical foundations that make blockchain systems tamper-resistant. We cover hash functions, public-key cryptography, Merkle trees, and digital signatures in plain language, with diagrams and real-world analogies to make these concepts approachable for non-technical learners.

Smart Contracts

Learn how self-executing programmes on blockchain networks work, their typical use cases, and the considerations around their deployment and auditing.

Web3 Fundamentals

Explore the concept of a decentralised internet, what it means for data ownership, and the protocols that aim to reshape how we interact online.

Distributed Ledger Systems

Understand the differences between public, private, and permissioned ledgers, and how consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake operate.

Digital Asset Basics

A clear, neutral overview of what digital assets are, how they are classified, and the regulatory landscape across different jurisdictions.

Blockchain History

Trace the evolution from early cryptographic research through to modern enterprise blockchain adoption, covering key milestones and technological breakthroughs.

How It Works

How Blockchain Works ⚙️

A simplified walkthrough of the fundamental process behind blockchain transaction validation and block creation.

1

A Transaction Is Initiated

A user requests a transaction, such as sending data or a digital asset. This request is broadcast to a peer-to-peer network of computers, known as nodes.

2

Network Validates the Transaction

Nodes use a consensus algorithm to validate the transaction. This process verifies the authenticity of the request using cryptographic proofs, ensuring no single entity controls the validation.

3

A New Block Is Created

Once validated, the transaction is grouped with other validated transactions into a new block. This block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, creating a linked chain.

4

Block Joins the Chain

The new block is added to the existing chain, making the record permanent and transparent. Altering any block would require changing every subsequent block across every node in the network, making the system highly tamper-resistant.

Applications

Real-World Use Cases 🌍

Blockchain technology extends far beyond digital currencies. Here are some of the sectors exploring distributed ledger solutions.

Supply Chain

Tracking goods from origin to consumer with transparent, verifiable records across multiple stakeholders.

Healthcare

Securing patient records and enabling interoperability between medical providers while maintaining privacy.

Governance

Exploring transparent voting mechanisms and public record keeping through tamper-resistant digital systems.

Digital Identity

Self-sovereign identity solutions that give individuals greater control over their personal data and credentials.
